Films you won’t find anywhere else
At Pluk, you see films before they hit Dutch cinemas, if they ever make it there at all. Films hardly anyone has heard of, that stick with you for days, or that you want to pass on the moment they end because they caught you so off guard. The kind you’ll be talking about for hours. Our programme is full of titles you won’t find anywhere else, from indie films with a mind of their own to experimental animation.
What kind of films do we show?
We go for filmmakers with serious vision who do their own thing – usually fresh voices or people who don’t get enough attention elsewhere. Pluk is all about giving new talent a shot, especially those driven by a real need to tell their story rather than chasing box office numbers. Sometimes these directors go on to become huge. We’ve shown early work from people like Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok) and Maren Ade (Toni Erdmann) way before they hit it big internationally. Our films come straight from the big festivals – Cannes, Berlin, Venice – but we pick the ones that are too edgy or weird for regular theaters. They’re sharp, raw, funny, heartbreaking. No algorithm picking these – just films that’ll mess with your head in the best way.
Under the stars in Amsterdam & Utrecht
At Pluk, the evening matters as much as the film. Eleven nights at the Stenen Hoofd in Amsterdam, ten in Utrecht. Outside, under the stars, in a deckchair with a blanket, with friends, your other half, or strangers who become recommendations. A film you’d never have picked yourself, and somewhere to talk it through afterwards. The kind that stays with you long after the credits.
What we programme
We go for filmmakers with a vision of their own, who follow their own path, often young or underrepresented voices. Pluk is a stage for new talent driven by something personal they need to say, not by what sells. Some of them go on to make it big. We screened Taika Waititi’s debut (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok) and a film by Maren Ade (Toni Erdmann) years before either broke through internationally. Our films come from the big festivals, Cannes, Berlin, Venice, but the ones a little too singular for a regular cinema, the ones Dutch audiences never get to see. Sharp, tender, absurd or quietly devastating, and always a fresh perspective. No algorithm deciding what you watch, just people picking films that move you and throw you off balance.
A film experience like no other
Our scouts trawl festivals around the world for the films you have to see. We keep a close eye on debuts and voices that rarely get a look-in in the mainstream. The result: an unpredictable mix of features, documentaries, shorts and animation, from oddball romantic comedies to AI-generated animation. There’s always something you didn’t see coming. And Pluk makes room to experiment, from crying contests to conversations with AI up on the big screen.
